Housingprime App, A Participatory Design Platform for Housing Customization and Community Self-organization
The traditional bottom-up design model has proved unable to adapt to the complexity and change of cities and buildings, and a participatory design model is gaining increasing attention. The paper presents a participatory design platform, Housingprime, that allows users to design their own houses and community based on mobile interfaces. Housingprime provides the whole process of service from design to construction, committed to meeting the housing crisis among youngsters aged 25 to 44 in megacities. This platform brings a shared housing model in community design, effectively improving spatial efficiency, adaptability and sense of belonging. The concept of participatory architectural design has decades of theoretical history. However, it has not been until the recent popularization of smartphones that it has a technical foundation for extensive practice. The paper first introduces the research background of participatory design and mobile interfaces in architecture practice. Then the paper presents the front-end use flow and back-end algorithmic logic of Housingprime by sharing a design result based on 200 hypothetical users’ data. Finally, this article discusses the further development of this community generation system.
