Seismic loads on structures and methods of their determination
Conclusions 1. At present there are no generally accepted standards of seismic loads on structures or substantiated methods of their determination. 2. The use of greatest peak values of accelerations of ground motion measured somewhere during strong earthquakes as design values should be considered unacceptable. 3. As a design law of variation in time of the seismic load on a structure we should take an accelerogram of a strong earthquake recorded in a region acknowledged to be similar in seismo-geological conditions to the region where a structure being designed is to be located. In this connection we must work out: a) a method of averaging the accelerations in the design accelorograms in time intervals commensurable with the time required for disturbance of strength or stability of the structure; such average accelerations could be used in calculations of structures by the static theory; b) methods of dynamic calculations of earth and concrete dams with the use of design accelerograms.
