Experimental Study on the Displacement and Strain of Underpinning Piles during Basement Excavation
During excavation beneath an existing foundation, the stability of a pre-existing building was an interesting topic in geotechnical engineering. In this paper, a scale model test was conducted to analyze the vertical displacement and strain change of underpinning piles during excavation beneath a structure. The model consisted of underpinning piles pre-installed in soil, with a reinforced concrete building placed on underpinning piles. The strain and settlement of piles were observed to reveal the time-settlement of piles and the strain change of piles during excavation. Furthermore, spatial positions of strain of piles were presented in this paper. The results showed that underpinning piles had underwent significant strain variation during excavation. Moreover, part of piles tended to settle during excavation, whereas others experienced uplift. These results provided important guidance for the design of underpinning piles and the strengthening position of the structure.
