New nontoxic anticorrosion coating on steelwork of hydraulic structures
Conclusions 1. A nontoxic, nonexplosive, and noncombustible zinc silicate paint ZhS-80A was developed on a base of industrially produced medium-modulus liquid sodium silicate which has improved technological properties and is more practical and cheaper in comparison with other analogous Soviet materials (paints V-ZhS-41 and silicozinc). 2. Inorganic zinc silicate coatings have a higher resistance to impact on metal substrates with a thickness equal to the thickness of steelwork coverings at hydroelectric stations in comparison with organic coatings (KhV-74, KhS-720, ÉKZhS-40). 3. The character of the change in the strength of adhesion to metal with consideration of the higher impact strength of zinc silicate coatings and wear resistance favors giving preference to these coatings for corrosion protection of steelwork operating under conditions of a variable water level or in tranquil freshwater. In flowing water coatings of this type are less durable than the tested organic coatings. 4. The experimental introduction of zinc silicate coating ZhS-80A at the Narva hydroelectric station confirmed its suitability for corrosion protection at operating stations.
