The Rural Habitat and Architectural Imagination
This chapter focuses on the role of rural architecture and countryside habitats in the formation of modern Portuguese architectural culture. It particularly highlights the importance of two surveys conducted by Portuguese architects in the 20th century – one focusing specifically on rural space, the other extending beyond it but still including it. We frame these surveys in the context of their time, as well as in the debates of Geography and Human Geography, that partly provided the basis for the architectural surveys. Moreover, we highlight examples collected on those surveys in the current territory of the Lisbon Region, using them to illustrate the socio-metabolic transition from a fundamentally rural to a metropolitan space, a transition which deeply affected the regional food system.
