Green Building Concept Implementation Through Appropriate Site Development (Case Study: Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana Yogyakarta)
Architecture and the built environment are sectors that contribute to climate change, related to high energy consumption and rapid development of infrastructure. Therefore, the concept of green building has become a necessity so that the rapid growth of the built environment does not worsen the quality of the environment. The implementation of the green building concept is not limited to building scale but is also related to site development. In GREENSHIP, a green building rating by Green Building Council Indonesia, there is a category namely Appropriate Site Development (ASD), that aims to solve problems related to site development, such as microclimate quality, pollution control, and water runoff management. As an education facility located in the city center of Yogyakarta, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) certainly has a significant contribution to the quality of the environment. Currently, UKDW does not have a second campus building in another area. In consequence, the high intensity of activities and the mobility of students and staff potentially bring negative impacts to the environment. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of green building concept on UKDW campus buildings, especially in the Appropriate Site Development (ASD) category. Direct observation method used for analyzing the criteria of Appropriate Site Development such as basic green area, public accessibility, and microclimate responses. The results of this study indicate that the campus area of UKDW has not reached the optimum points of the ASD criteria on GREENSHIP rating tools. Site landscaping becomes the main concern considering limited space in the urban area, and the microclimate aspects still need to be improved through material selection and the use of vegetation. While the strategy for public accessibility improvement requires the involvement of several stakeholders regarding a wider/macro area coverage. The results of this study become the basis for future development plans to support sustainable development in the city of Yogyakarta.
