Role of Green Buildings in Reduction of Energy Consumption
This chapter introduces the concept of green buildings for saving energy, conserving water, and maintaining an environment-friendly living in residential buildings as to develop sustainable housing. A case study of a project of constructing 11 villas in a residential area of Kuwait has been presented. This included design elements of a PV solar system, increasing energy efficiency, LED lighting, insulation, water conservation system, greywater recycling, and material recycling from solid waste generated. Energy analysis showed a total of 40% of direct energy savings (through energy conservation) and about 25% of indirect energy savings (through water conservation and solid waste recycling) in a villa of 500 m2 of total area designed as a green building. This, in turn, leads to reductions in CO2 emissions that contribute to global warming.
