Effect of Grain Refinement Through Minor Additions of Scandium and Zirconium on the Machinability of Al–Mg Alloys
Abstract The effects of grain refinement on the machining response of Al–Mg–Sc (Zr) alloys have been studied. The effects of machining on the work hardening and the subsequent recovery processes involved are also observed. In the binary alloy the surface roughness is found to be higher than that in other alloys with minor additions. In the alloys with minor additions sufficient grain refinement has increased both strength and ductility of the material and their machined surface finish has improved. At higher cutting speed grain refinement takes place in the base alloy due to recrystallization. In material removal, anisotropy among the different grains of the work materials leads to a high degree of waviness at the machined surface. In case of alloys with quaternary zirconium addition, the effect of deformation caused during machining persists even at high cutting speed.
