Performance of Composite Buttress and Cross Walls to Control Deformations Induced by Excavation
Abstract A series of three-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to investigate the performance of the composite buttress and cross walls (U-shape wall) including the depth of the cross wall, the length of the buttress wall, and the spacing of U-shape wall. For yielding an optimum performance, the normalized cross wall depth to excavation depth ratio (Dcw/He) could be designed around 0.15–0.2. Moreover, the design of buttress wall length depends on the target value of reduction. The 8 m interval of U-shape wall was recommended for producing a uniform reduction of the wall deflection. For 8 m interval of the U-shape wall, the 5 m length of the buttress wall could reduce the maximum wall deflection and the ground surface settlement around 60%–80%, respectively, from those without U-shape wall installation.
