Experimental Evaluation of Inner-Vacancy Level Energies for Comparison with Theory
Abstract Evidence can be found elsewhere in this volume of considerable progress on the theoretical side in calculations of atomic inner-shell energy levels. Especially as regards the deeper lying levels of heavier atoms one is obliged to use a relativistic formulation which entails a number of questions. Firstly any structure which emerges from the Dirac one-electron problem shares with it questions about proper accounting of the role of negative-energy states. This seems tractable via projection operators (Sucher, 1980; Mittleman, 1981) and will not be further considered here. Secondly, in the case of a many-electron atom, one does not have a closed-form relativistic Hamiltonian; the usual approach is to construct a relativistic analog of the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian (Weiss, 1981; Desclaux, 1979) with the static electron-electron interaction included in the Hamiltonian while transverse photon exchange (the Breit interaction), self-energy, and vacuum polarization are treated perturbatively.
