River Flow Measurement for Cameron Highlands Hydroelectric Scheme Telemetry System in the Case of Robinson’s Fall Flow Station; Practices by Hydrology Unit, ES-Hydro
TNB’s Cameron Highlands Hydroelectric Scheme (CHPS) has taken the initiative to develop a telemetry flow forecasting system, covering installation of real-time gauges, flow gauging stations and forecasting model to help them in predicting incoming flood and preparing for early response prior to releasing water through the spillway. The telemetry system was established by TNB Research Sdn. Bhd. (TNBR) in 2016. After the completion of the telemetry system, Hydro Services Unit of TNB Power Generation Sdn. Bhd. (TNB Genco) has been tasked to continue with the maintenance works. One of the main tasks is to carry out manual river flow measurement. The main purpose of the river flow measurement is to determine the velocity of the river flow and discharge at a specific river section to compare with installed automatic flow sensor. Real-time river flow data recorded by the sensor from this telemetry river flow station are transmitted to a master receiver (server) located at JOR power station CHGCC operation room via GSM modem. The real-time river flow data will then be compared with the river flow data measured manually every 2 months. The outcome from the data collected will be used to update and calibrate the CHPS early flood warning system for the dams. In the methodology chapter of this paper, type of gauging method currently practice by TNB Genco was elaborated, which is wading by rod used at Robinson’s Fall flow station as a case study. At the discussion chapter, comparison of the flow data recorded by automatic flow sensor system and manual measurements was made.
