Field Observations and Assessment of Performance Level of Steel Structures After the Kahramanmaras Earthquake Sequence of 2023
The series of two devastating earthquakes occurred along the East Anatolian Fault and hit Türkiye and Syria on 06 February 2023. An expert team from the National Earthquake Engineering Center of University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, including the author, visited some sites in four of the most affected cities like Iskenderun, Antakya, Pazarcik and Kahramanmaras for a reconnaissance mission. This article shares the field-collected information and basic results of assessment of the seismic performance level of buildings with steel structures after the two devastating earthquakes. The observations for a few mid-raised (above 10 storey) steel buildings and low-raised buildings are presented and discussed. The advantages of steel construction are pointed out and analysed on the backgrounds of the observed severe damages and collapsed buildings. Based on the strong motion data recorded from the nearest to the visited sites seismic stations, the expected seismic performance level of the structures is estimated. A summary of the steel construction seismic performance after these strong earthquakes is shared.
