Fracture and Mesoscopic Plastic Deformation
Abstract This article discusses some recent advances in the understanding of plastic deformation near a crack tip at a mesoscopic scale. This is a scale that is in between the engineering macroscopic scale and the microscopic scale of the atomic description used by physicists. The mesoscopic scale is where one observes the individual grains or even the dislocation structures. We start out by discussing the near-tip stress fields inside a single crystal, using continuum model of plasticity. Then, we zoom in further and adopt a discrete dislocation dynamics study of a propagating crack. It will be shown that very near the crack tip, the dislocations have a dual role. On the one hand, dislocation activity gives rise to plastic dissipation which increases the crack growth resistance. On the other hand, the local stress concentration associated with discrete dislocations in the vicinity of the crack tip promote fracture.
