Effect of Interface Connection on Performance of Narrow Shored Reinforced Earth Wall
Narrow Reinforced Earth (RE) walls are usually constructed in limited space (a ratio of wall width L to wall height H is less than 0.7) and in front of existing stable walls. These walls are preferred in such situation where existing highway width is needed to be increased or in mountain terrain. Performance of such walls differs from conventional RE walls because of constrained space and interaction with existing stable walls. Many researchers evidenced that due to limited width (L) of narrow RE wall, ample resistance against pull-out force in reinforcements was not fully mobilization. That led to pull-out failure and/or development of tension cracks in extreme loading conditions at the interface between narrow RE wall and shoring wall. However, experimental database especially with the interface connection is scarce. Thus, the main objective of this study is to understand the actual characteristics of narrow RE wall by load–displacement settlement tests having provision of interface connection between RE wall and shoring wall. For the connection between two walls, friction connection was used. Results indicated that friction-based connection for connecting narrow RE wall with existing shoring is an active measure to reduce the deformation in the narrow RE wall.
