Mass Transit: An Integrated Approach to Sustainable Urban Development – The Case of Greater Cairo Region
Designed to deepen the knowledge base of sustainable green cities and to stimulate creative thinking, this article investigates the concept of greening the urban environment as an integrated approach to realizing sustainable urban development, mitigating the impact of rapid urbanization and enhancing the quality of life. It examines the role of green mobility and transport in sustainable urban development. A comparative analysis of transport models and approaches adopted in the US, Europe and varied developing nations following the Second World War is exhibited to demonstrate the role of integrated transport systems in planning sustainable green cities. The article draws on the experiences of North American and European cities as well as developing nations endeavors to offer public transport and reduce car use in urban settings. An in-depth investigation of transit-oriented challenges, opportunities and planning approaches is followed by an overview of the rationale and significance of the method. In conclusion, the article illustrates the first author’s experience as former Governor of Giza in attempting to implement a green mobility and transport system in the city of Giza as part of the governate’s strategy to pursue sustainable urban development.
