An Experimental Investigation of the Fire-Induced Oscillatory Vent Flow Through a Horizontal Opening
Abstract Experiments were conducted in the confined compartment with a central horizontal opening to investigate the oscillatory vent flow induced by fire through a horizontal opening. A laser technique was adopted to observe the horizontal vent flow, and the oscillatory flow behavior was recorded. Many other parameters, such as mass burning rate, vent flow temperature, flame pulsation frequency, etc., were obtained to analyze the pool fire combustion and puffing behaviors. Results showed that the empirical equations on oscillatory frequency of smoke gas temperature in the opening were verified in this paper. Then, the oscillatory frequency of smoke gas area was proposed to characterize the vent flow oscillatory behavior. The oscillatory frequency of the smoke gas area decreased with the horizontal opening size rising. Moreover, the effects of the vent flow oscillatory behavior on the combustion and puffing characteristics in the confined compartment were also analyzed.
