Sharing by Design
Sharing by design is not an intuitive idea. People usually know what, when, and how to share resources. However, designing more effective or efficient ways to share is not the first thing that comes to one’s mind. In arguing for the possibility of sharing by design, this chapter begins by discussing the ascendancy of sharing today. Subsequently, it focuses on two key paradigms of sharing by design—namely, the paradigms of ‘design by capital’ and ‘design by commoning’. While the former relies on the exposition of a small case study of Starcity co-living facility in San Jose, the latter draws out the intricate relations of the co-housing configuration. The combined discussion of these two paradigms then constitutes the background for a third paradigm, which is ‘design by systems thinking’ in Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-43569-1_4.
