This chapter presents best practices for conducting Dynamic Image Analysis (DIA) of soils. In particular, the feasibility, repeatabilityRepeatability, and accuracyAccuracy of DIA for routine analysis of particle size and shape distributionParticle size and shape distributions (PSSD) was investigated using sixteen granularGranular soils spanning a number of common sizes and shapes. Second, the impact of the chosen size and shape descriptors on the resulting particle granulometryGranulometry was presented. Next, the effect of a variety of test parameters including moistureMoisture content, sample weightWeight, primary airAirpressurePressure, and test duration were explored to determine the optimal specimen weightWeight and equipment settings for DIA. Finally, the efficacy of DIA in resolving mixturesMixtureof fineFineand coarseCoarse sands was also established.
