The “X-Minute City”: Milan from the Idea of Proximity to the Creation of a Quality Public City
If the cities of the twentieth century seemed designed for cars, in the twenty-first century urban planning places people at the center. The idea of the “x-minute city” is increasingly widespread, where all services are reachable quickly. Paris is not the only case that offers solutions for proximity and socialization. Similar concepts have emerged worldwide, proposing different models of urban policy, which, beyond the environmental motivations, indicate a city characterized by a strong identity. It is a more holistic approach to urban development focusing on the multifunctional use of space to move from globalism to localism. However, it is necessary to consider the city as a place of short networks well connected to the long ones. The study offers an overview of this concept and its applications to the case of Milan, where an experimental project was launched aimed at accentuating the collaboration between public and private as a solution to optimize resources. The activities are divided into three main actions: drafting Area Studies as tools for intermediate urban planning, reviewing procedural processes, and coordinating strategic transformations. The Area Study builds a framework for urban regeneration.
