Data architecture deals with the architecture of the data landscape (in the context of business processes and information systems of the organization). Architecture, in turn, deals with (1) the fundamental properties of a system and (2) the principles guiding its design and evolution. With this in mind, an overview of the field of data architecture is presented. It is argued that data architecture deals with the big ticket decisions that affect how the organization creates, stores, moves, and uses data to create value.
