Abstract The toughness of a material is its capacity to retain strength following damage. The most severe form of damage being a sharp crack, the most severe measure of toughness is the maximum stress which can be applied before such a crack extends. Unlike tensile strength, for example, this stress will depend on the geometry of the cracked body, as well as on inherent properties of the material.
