Basic Coupling Mechanisms in Laser Surface Treatment
Abstract The functioning of a large number of workpieces is mainly determined by the properties of their surfaces. This is the case, for example, whenever friction and resulting wear mechanisms are involved or where the workpiece is exposed to high temperature and/or corrosive ambient conditions. Well established thermal processes like induction or flame hardening and plasma techniques for alloying or cladding are industrially used to achieve the required properties. These treatments yield chemical and mechanical alterations of the material in layers close to the surface with hardly affecting the bulk material of the workpiece. This approach allows the design and fabrication of workpieces of improved performance with an economical use of expensive and strategic materials, at the same time.
