Landscape Degradation: The August 2019 Puthumala Landslide in Kerala, India
In recent times, landslides have been occurring with greater frequency and impact in the Western Ghats mountain ranges of India. The Western Ghats of Kerala State in particular have been witnessing several fatal and devastating landslides, especially during the annual monsoons. While heavy rainfall has triggered many of these slides, human intervention is also responsible for creating and reactivating landslides in the region, whether through deforestation, improper land use practices, slope modification, mining, or improper drainage. Thus, both natural causes and anthropogenic activity, individually or in combination, are responsible for creating conducive conditions for the occurrence of landslides. In this paper, we present the results of preliminary field investigations at the Puthumala landslide site in Wayanad District, Kerala. The slide occurred on August 8, 2019, killing 17 people and leading to an entire village being abandoned, making it one of the most catastrophic landslides in Kerala.
