Influence of Coarse Fraction on Characteristics of Expansive Soil–Sand Mixtures
Abstract Expansive soils also called swelling soils are known for volume changes due to seasonal moisture changes. Swelling soils in nature may have different liquid limit (LL) and percent coarse fraction (CF). The volume change characteristics of expansive soils are influenced by both CF and LL of fine fraction. In this study an attempt has been made to study the influence of CF on compaction, strength and swelling characteristics of two different expansive soils having LLs of 52 and 112%. This study reveals that the influence of CF has significant effect on compaction characteristics if it exceeds 25% by weight of the soil. CF in excess of 40% has a little influence on unconfined compressive strength (UCS) in both the soils. The optimum proportion of CF in view of swelling characteristics was 32% for soil having LL of 52 and 40% for soil having LL of 112%.
