Cities and Citizens in Concert for the Global Sustainability Bond
Global governance and international negotiations have long involved the national level of politics. It is increasingly recognised that cities can be more dynamic and agile, better understand the needs of their constituencies and territories and uphold value-based exchanges at higher governance levels. Cities bring the legitimacy of global governance nearer to the citizens and hold many hopes for sustainable recovery and revival. Making the vision become reality requires the orchestration of bold actions by all stakeholders able to understand and influence the interdependency of systems towards a world green, just, smart and inclusive transition. Global coalitions and alliances of forward engaged cities and citizens can lead to a global solidarity bond and new democratic dialogues between the micro-regulations of local communities and the macro-regulations of global governance.
This chapter brings together key insights and messages for the committed to lead transformational systemic change towards a radically better future. Purposeful implementation of global commitments towards the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement can boost the transitions and lead to a higher multiplier effect and reinforced impact. The recovery from the crises can and should bring an opportunity for sustainability, if ambitious and influential local, regional, national and international actions are fully coherent and aligned. The full potential of cities should be activated and enhanced to make the final result more than the sum of the actions of all committed partners.
If cities cannot lead, then who? If not now, then when?
