DEM Simulation of Sand Liquefaction Under Partially Drained Conditions
Abstract The drainage condition of sand under cyclic and seismic loading often deviates from the ideal undrained and drained conditions, being partially drained. Drainage conditions can significantly influence the liquefaction behavior of sand. In order to study the liquefaction of sand under partially drained conditions, 2D discrete element method (DEM) cyclic biaxial simulations are conducted on granular materials with partial drainage. Volumetric strain is controlled in the simulations to achieve designated partially drained conditions. The simulation results show that drainage condition plays an important role in both the liquefaction susceptibility and the liquefaction induced deformation of sand.
