Abstract Acoustics is an ancient science. In the fifth century BC, Pythagoras made the science of musical tones into an entire philosophy. In renaissance times Galileo and Descartes developed the mathematics of musical tones, and Isaac Newton tried (but failed) to calculate the speed of sound in air. The nineteenth century saw the beginning of truly serious study of human hearing—the anatomy, the physiology, and the psychology. Herman von Helmholtz led the way.
