General Finite Element Methods with Special Focus on NMM
This chapter summarizes the principle and algorithm related to another member of mesh-based method, namely, the NMM that belongs to the category of “general finite element methods (GFEMs)”. The unique characteristic of NMM is, instead of conventional “node” in the fundamental FEM, it defines a new core object termed as “cover” that is composed of the finite element patches surrounding the node. Polynomial cover functions replacing the constant nodal variables (i.e. displacements) are used to interpolate the field functions within manifold elements created by the union of covers. The coefficients in the polynomial cover function are solved by the algebraic equation set according to the virtual work or variational principle. In this manner, less restraint is imposed on the mesh generation with considerable amount of structural planes, which allows for a great simplification in the pre-process work towards the computation for complex geotechnical and hydraulic structures.
