Main causes, signs, and consequences of aging of concrete dams
Conclusions 1. The aging process is a time factor causing irreversible phenomena leading to a decrease of the original reliability margins of hydraulic structures. The rate of aging depends on the quality of the designs, technology of constructing the dams, and operating conditions. 2. Prediction of the consequences of aging during designing is quite difficult, since the manifestation of aging is individual, usually encompasses individual elements of the dam-foundation system, and is provoked by violations in construction technology and change in the parameters of the operating regime. 3. Aging of structures is determined visually and instrumentally; when analyzing these on-site data it is necessary to establish the cause-and-effect relations among changes in the parameters controlling the loads and scheme of static behavior of the dam-foundation system. Only after analyzing the causes of the change in former stress, strain, and seepage states of hydraulic structures can the reliability margins be estimated and repair and restoration works be recommended.
