Analysis & Design of Slender Shear Wall with and Without Openings
Nowadays structures are going higher and higher and the effect of lateral forces by wind and earthquake on tall structures is becoming critical. Shear walls are used to resist these loads in those structures. The shear wall system is the most economic lateral load resisting system for buildings with more than 10 storeys. Shear walls have very high in-plane stiffness and strength which is very effective against lateral loads. Due to the functional requirements of structure such as doors, windows or any internal corridor, the shear wall may contain many openings, which may largely affect the overall seismic response of the structure. In this paper, results of numerical study and comparison of design codes (IS-13920:2016, ACI 318–19, NZS-3101:2006) are presented. Numerical analysis was conducted using ABAQUS software to study the effects of opening and its orientation on the slender shear wall. The Load–displacement graph was able to predict the decrease in strength and ductility of shear walls when openings were provided.
