Vibration-Based Damage Identification of Steel Moment-Resisting Frames
Steel moment-resisting frames with yield-link connections are widely used for new and retrofitted application to withstand tremendous lateral forces during an earthquake event. In the use of these connections in the lateral force resisting systems, the stiffness of the yield-links and properties of connections would be changed during an earthquake, leading to potential structural failures and collapses. Hence, the ability to monitor and identify the state of structural property with structural health monitoring (SHM) is vitally important. In this study, the frame’s damage including the damage status as well as damaged yield-links is identified by using vibration-based SHM methods, such as (i) frequency change-based damage detection method, (ii) model assurance criterion and (iii) modal strain energy-based damage detection method. In particular, the Open System for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (OpenSEES) is employed in order to obtain vibration characteristics of the structures when the properties of yield-links change.
