Bamboo as Building Material
“Bamboo as building material” describes: the chemical, physical and mechanical characteristics of bamboo; the main protective treatments that are used to ensure its durability over time against atmospheric agents; the regulatory framework governing its use and the international and national market. The authors know only continuous research and experimentation on the material will enable the acquisition of the necessary knowledge for its use and, consequently, the establishment of consolidated construction practices. In this regard, particular attention is paid to the treatment of the different types of connection systems of bamboo stalks, from the most ancient to the latest generation and innovative solutions, available and described in the literature. The last paragraph is dedicated to the presentation of two specific species of bamboo: Bambusa vulgaris and Phyllostachys viridis, which grow luxuriantly in the Botanical Garden of the University of Palermo. The supply of a few linear meters of stalks of these two species constituted the raw material of the experimental prototypes.
