Slope Stability Evaluation of Highway Embankments Using the Geo-slope Model
In this investigation, GeoStudio (SLOPE/W) finite element analysis software is employed to create numerical models of highway embankments, aligning with IRC: 36 guidelines for high embankment construction. Present study analyzed the slope stability of a six-lane highway embankment model having a consistent slope (H:V = 2:1) with differing heights (6–18 m) and diverse fill materials, including recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), recycled brick aggregates (RBA), locally available sandy soil (LS), and their blends. Results showed that FOS values for all fill materials exceeded the minimum requirements outlined in IRC: 75—2015 for high embankments. The study also noted a consistent FOS decline with increasing slope height, nearly leveling off after 15 m. Earthquake conditions led to an approximately 20% FOS reduction, regardless of embankment height (H). The study suggests that utilizing recycled C&D waste aggregates facilitates the construction of highway embankments to considerable heights.
