A Commentary on Architectural Education
The concern of the JAE Board with architectural education prompted us to use the occasion of the release of the Boyer Report to invite colleagues to reflect upon the current discussion about architectural education, and to initiate a dialogue with JAE readers. Because Anthony Jackson's book, Reconstructing Architecture for the Twenty-First Century (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1995) also took a long hard look at education, we asked diverse groups of educators from a variety of institutions to read the two books and write their thoughts about the issues raised by Jackson and Boyer in eight- to ten-page essays. Of the six who agreed to write, only two ultimately did so. Although this was most disappointing, we hope that their essays will prompt JAE readers to respond as well. Katerina Ruedi, the new director of the School of Architecture at University of Illinois at Chicago, moved from England in 1997. Carol Burns, member of the faculty at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, is a member of the JAE Board and also manages her own practice in Cambridge.
