Stochastic nature of turbulence over mobile bed channels
Experimental work on measurement of coherent turbulent structures using three-dimensional Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter in a mobile bed channel with uniform and non-uniform (i.e. mixed size) sediments, are reported. Analysis of velocity data indicated that velocity distributions are relatively more nonuniform over the coarser sediment vis-à-vis finer sediment for the channel beds with uniform and nonuniform sediment characteristics. The sweep and ejection events are responsible for major morphological changes in the mobile channel bed due to their prominence over whole depth of the channel. The assessment of modeling the transition probabilities of turbulent events indicated that first-order Markov’s process is most suitable vis-à-vis zeroth- and second-order processes in the channel. The results also indicated that stable events are more significant vis-à-vis marginal and cross-events; the contribution of the marginal and cross-events are significant near the bed only and their effects are decreased at larger depths.
