Shear friction in recycled aggregate concrete
Initially uncracked push-off specimens were tested to investigate shear friction in recycled aggregate concrete (RCA) with concrete grade, clamping force and the replacement level of recycled aggregates being the variables. Deformation behavior and failure modes were observed to be similar between the natural and the RCA specimens with the ‘concrete contribution’ to shear strength in terms of cohesion and aggregate interlock being practically independent of the amount of recycled aggregates in the concrete. As with natural aggregate concrete, shear friction in RCA was also observed to be sensitive to concrete grade and clamping force on the shear plane and even in the transversely reinforced specimens the ‘concrete contribution’ on the average accounted for about 65% of the total shear strength. In the context of design, the shear strength equation in the Prestressed Concrete Institute code gave reasonably accurate and conservative predictions of the measured shear strengths.
