Computerised dispatching for shared‐ride taxi operations in Canada
Due to the complexity of dispatching tasks involved, automation is believed to be the key to the implementation of shared‐ride taxi systems involving a large fleet. To date, there are no true shared‐ride taxi systems in Canada that are computerized, although a few exclusive ride systems have to be automated to some extent. This paper reviews the software and hardware developments to date based on information available from the Diamond (Montreal), Intercab (Mississauga) and Blueline (Ottawa) computerized taxi dispatch systems and U.S. studies.
The understanding of dispatching tasks and the examination of appropriate algorithm are pre‐requisites in planning for successful computerized shared‐ride taxi systems. The paper, therefore, analyses the elements and complexities of dispatching functions and discusses the applicability of Dial‐a‐Ride and taxi scheduling algorithms together with suggested adaptations. In addition, a discussion of the computer and digital communication hardware and possible technological development is presented.
An economic analysis of shared‐ride taxi operations would be considered an integral part of such a study. However, due to the lack of real life data, it is only possible to produce a parametric analysis based on the limited data available from a medium sized (110 vehicles) exclusive ride taxi system.
Finally, the implementation potential of computerized shared‐ride taxi systems in Canada is addressed.
