A Profane Annunciation: The Representation of Sexuality at Ronchamp
Le Corbusier was critical of the attitude of the Catholic Church to sexuality. He wanted to revive Christianity by bringing it back in contact with its roots in ancient religion. As a result of “meticulous research”, he discovered that the figure of Mary could be interpreted in a multitude of ways. He exploited the ambiguities present in her figure to give a reinterpretation of Christianity that addressed issues of sexuality and was both more tolerant and more inclusive. This article is an exploration of the ways in which such ideas were represented in the the chapel of Notre Dame du Haut Ronchamp.
