A comprehensive review of the fresh and hardened characteristics of self-compacting geopolymer concrete
Self-compacting geopolymer concrete (SCGC) offers several benefits compared to self-compacting concrete (SCC) made of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), including higher mechanical strength and enhanced environmental sustainability due to less CO2 emissions. The production process of SCGC differs significantly from that SCC due to the activation process of geopolymer binders with alkaline activators, affecting the fresh and hardened characteristics of SCGC. This article reviews the influence of mix proportions on the fresh and hardened characteristics of SCGC, including setting time, workability, strength, and microstructure. It also provides insights into the importance of the chemical compositions of binders and alkaline activators on the fresh and hardened properties of SCGC. The findings highlight the importance of careful selection and optimization of the chemical compositions of binders and alkaline activators for the mix design of SCGC. Limitations of the existing research studies about SCGC and possible solutions are highlighted.
