Programmes are produced by contractors on major contracts to show how they foresee their projects progressing. These programmes will typically be checked by the supervising engineer, and it is the way in which this check is implemented that is under particular scrutiny. Programmes on two major projects were studied and a questionnaire survey then carried out, to find out how supervising engineers check these programmes in practice. Armed with this information, and an understanding of the literature on the subject, a recommended procedure for carrying out these checks is offered.
