Efficiency of Infiltration Galleries as a Source of Water in Arid Lands
Infiltration galleries (ghanats or qanats) for collecting underground water by gravity are probably the oldest, most striking feature of ground water utilization in Middle Eastern and lands. A team from the Faculty of Meteorology and Environmental Studies at King Abdulaziz University have initiated a survey of qanats in the Jeddah/Makkah region of Western Saudi Arabia. The survey focuses not only upon descriptive information on the construction and maintenance of the remaining operative qanats in the region, but also raises questions concerning the hydrologic parameters of this system.
