The problem of housing is most acute when the users belong to a very low income group who cannot pay for the houses they occupy. Intuitive solutions aggravate the problem to a further degree. An investigation by three researchers of the Architecture and Physical Planning Division, Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, India, outlines how the users' actual requirements can be discovered and then interpreted for arriving at economic planning solutions.
