Intricate Fictions: Mapping Princely Authority in a Sixteenth-Century Florentine Urban Plan
This article argues that the 1584 Bonsignori Map is anything but the objective and instrumentally produced map that the histories of cartography and urbanism have claimed. Long recognized as one of the first accurate, measured, and highly detailed ichnographic constructions, this map is instead a propagandistic construction, teeming with biases, distortions, and misrepresentations of the physical and spatial conditions of Florence circa 1584. The map was created as an apparatus designed to describe, explicate, and promote the transformation of Florence from an oligarchic republic to a city ruled by the new grand-ducal Medici court of Cosimo I and his sons Federico and Francesco. In this sense, the map is, above all else, a mechanism for reifying the cult of the Medici Duchy.
