Earthquake Intensity, Damage, and Conservation of Unreinforced Masonry Buildings
There are precious and historic unreinforced masonry buildings in many countries located in high-risk seismic zones that are prone to serious damage as a consequence of earthquakes. It is not viable to strengthen simultaneously all historic buildings under threat; as a consequence, there is a need for exact planning. One of the essential requirements in making decisions concerning protecting a building is to improve knowledge of the damage that earthquakes of various intensities would cause, as well as possible strengthening methods to avoid such damage. The information in this regard exists but is widely scattered. This paper is the outcome of a comprehensive literature review. The aim is to produce a single table of information, to be able to choose which unreinforced masonry buildings to strengthen for various levels of earthquake risk.
