NONIDEAL TRANSPORT IN VADOSE ZONE DUE TO LEACHING FROM A LANDFILL
A numerical model is developed to simulate the flow and transport process in a variably saturated porous medium. Non-equilibrium transport mechanisms, including physical and chemical non-equilibrium, have been incorporated. The model is used to simulate contamination of an aquifer due to rainfall over a landfill. Different scenarios involving heavy and light rainfall have been analysed. The time at which the contaminant concentration rises above the permissible level is noted, since it is useful in the design of the landfill. Breakthrough curves are obtained for observation wells near the landfill. The spatial concentration distribution is obtained for different times showing the movement of the contaminant plume.
