Eine Plattform für die Wissenschaft: Bauingenieurwesen, Architektur und Urbanistik
The years 1809 to 1822 were pivotal in the formation of Sydney as the pre‐eminent city in Australasia. Under the patronage of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, a small group of officials with considerable architectural expertise set about laying the foundations of identity of the young city. A social and political order was imposed with military precision. Architecture and urban design formed part of the arsenal against precipitous anarchy. The result was a structured public realm graced by many well‐executed works of architecture. This paper traces the progress of this vision and the character of the city which emerged, and discusses the impact of the persona on the urban artefact.
