When exposed to the outdoor environment without surface protection, glass-fibre reinforced polyester (GRP) composite undergoes surface deterioration which consists of two types of failures-fibre prominence and surface micro-cracking, both of which detract from its appearance. This account of a postulated mechanism of the environmentally induced breakdown, based on artificial weathering, results from work by the Division of Building Research in Ottawa, Canada.
