Roller compacted concrete pavement using natural pozzolan: experimental investigation and salt-scaling durability model
Roller compacted concrete pavements (RCCPs) are nowadays gaining widespread application. The replacement of pozzolanic materials in RCCPs may help offset the carbon footprint of cement production, and this is both economically justified and environmentally friendly. This study investigates the physical, mechanical, and durability behaviour of RCCPs exposed to deicing salts in cold regions. The considered concrete mixtures were comprised of binder materials with 15%, 25% and 30% replacement of two natural pozzolans, and water to cement ratios of 0.45 and 0.5. The experimental results indicate that the mixtures with the level of 15% pozzolanic materials replacement and water to cement ratio of 0.45 have the best performance in terms of mechanical strength and durability. Moreover, a model is developed relating the deicing salt-scaling amount with the mixture property and physical indices of hardened concrete.
