Reexamine Sustainable Development: Definitions and Taiwan's Approaches
This paper reviews the definitions and approaches towards sustainable development. Emphases are placed on concepts, definitions of sustainable development, and the contradiction and difficulties to implement it. Possible approaches of Taiwanese experiences towards sustainable development are also discussed. Although approaches to sustainable development are varied in different dynamic transition processes and states of a political body, the indicator approach is increasingly employed to assess the impacts of human activities. This approach is useful to detect its processes and give a way to gauge progress towards some goals under appropriate policies. In addition, EIA and SEA might be play important role to achieve sustainability on local, regional, and national levels in practices.
