Towards a tourist regional multiplier

Meaningful regional planning requires a knowledge of the multiplier effects arising out of spending by the exogenous sectors of the economy. Tourism is one such sector. This multiplier model uses a simplified technique, which measures and compares the indirect effects of each type of tourist spending. The pattern of tourist expenditure is broken down and multiplied by the regional value added elements. These are the most sensitive part of the model and separate formulae are provided to measure the leakage element and regional value added for each category of consumer outlet. The remainder of the model is adapted from a Tiebout formula to allow for regional leakages out of the propensity to consume. The model is used to calculate four types of tourist multiplier for the island of Anglesey.
